"Oh, sacrament of summer days
Oh, last communion in the haze,
  Permit a child to join"
 -Emily Dickinson

I begin my blog, Painting from the Open Air, with a favorite quote from Emily Dickinson that has been my mantra before setting out to paint for many years. Although this poem, 'Indian Summer' speaks to the end of the warm season, it is a passionate cry to partake in the sacredness of the season's change. With this virtuous request, engrained upon my heart, I approach nature in all seasons when I journey out to paint. This is how the true dialogue begins, with the appeal itself!

With these thoughts, another quote comes to mind which always brings a smile.

"I am two with Nature"
- Woody Allen

Of course Allen is saying something absurd in response to a statement he thinks is absurd, in typical Woody Allen style, but it is true in a way! Nature is untamed and, at times, unforgiving. If one stands around swept up in beauty while quoting Wordsworth, he may just get knocked on his arse! Just as an Indian summer flashes through early autumn fooling the migrating bird so does New England's weather change on a moment's notice to wake the dreamer! In this light, one must exercise intuition, as well as intellect, and become 'two with Nature.'

So with sincere humility, I kindly invite you to come along on my painting journey as I share the struggle and success of painting in the open air. May you take in the fresh scented breezes, feel the wind in your hair, the sunlight on your brow and smile when nature knocks me on my arse and wakes me from my dream.

Love and laughter,

Jackie
